Dignity Chair helps patients and caregivers

For those who need help getting on and off of the commode, whether due to age or surgery, calling for help is always embarrassing for both the patient and the caregiver. Whether the patient is at home or in a health care facility, it is very awkward—not to mention being a physical challenge for the caregiver.

A personal experience with a friend who had cancer led local businessman Robert Chapa to invent the Dignity Chair to give patients a lift when they need it the most. Invented and manufactured by Mr. Chapa, the Dignity Chair is built on a walker-type frame. Because it sits right on the floor, surrounding the toilet, there is virtually no installation needed.

This feature also means it is easily moved when you are going to visit someone else or when it is time to clean around the commode.

A simple switch on the arm rest raises or lowers the seat to the desired height. A tall person can raise it as high as needed and a short person can stop it at a lower level. The seat itself tilts forward to make it easy for the patient to get on and off.

Because the Dignity Chair operates for a long time off a small rechargeable battery, it will not hog a plug in your bathroom. Simply plug it in for a few hours whenever it runs down, and your plug is available for nightlights or whatever else it is needed for.

Chapa feels this chair could be the difference in needing to hire overnight caregivers, if all that is needed is help in getting on and off the commode. It will certainly relieve family caregivers of a very embarrassing task.

Even professional caregivers will benefit because it will no longer be necessary to lean forward at an awkward angle and strain back and shoulder muscles and joints. The Dignity Chair’s standard model is built to lift up to 500 pounds.

While there is a standard size and color, Chapa says custom orders are welcome, because he makes them right here in the Permian Basin.

Plus, the chair is available not just for sale, but also for rent. “That way,” he notes, “if someone just needs short-term help because of hip replacement surgery or an illness, they do not need to buy one and keep it around. A rental is perfect for that situation.”
