Leisure Golf Club, one of only three golf resorts in Kenya, was built in 1971 and officially inaugurated in 1972 by former President Jomo Kenyatta. Much of the hotel's expansion was witnessed in the mid-1970s and attributed to Dr Wilhelm Meister who first visited the resort in 1973 immediately falling in love with the Kenyan Coast.

Dr Meister was to eventually purchase the hotel in the 70's and became the executive chairman in 1985. It was Dr Meister who steered the development of the resort and using his European connections to bring tourists from Germany, France, Belgium and the Scandinavian countries.
