General information
What is combed cotton, and how is it produced?
The term "combed cotton" is likely something you have seen when browsing an online bedding store or a local bedding market. Do you understand its composition and how it is produced?
What is Combed cotton?
Regular cotton is softer than combed cotton. After being picked, the cotton is given additional treatment before being spun into yarn to create it. The combed cotton will remove many impurities as the fabric is being made. Combed cotton is smoother and less likely to pill than ordinary cotton.
How is combed cotton made?
The same cotton plant that produces other varieties of cotton is the source of combed cotton. Following harvest, cotton must be carded, a labor-intensive procedure that separates the fibers and runs them all in the same direction. By the time the carding process is complete, more than 15% of the raw material volume is wasted. This explains the greater production and material costs. Following the carding process, the fibers are combed with fine brushes to remove shorter fibers and impurities, producing cotton fibers that are stronger, longer, and straighter, as well as an end product with far greater and desired qualities than plain cotton.
